A Feast of Edible Diversity and Horticultural Innovation

Design Inspiration

Our design for the World Food Garden at RHS Wisley integrates fruit, vegetables, and herbs in an innovative manner, occupying nearly an acre of land. It connects with the new National Centre for Horticultural Science and Learning (designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre) and draws on Wisley’s rich history of edible growing dating back to the 1950s.

The garden’s design, inspired by vascular bundles in plant stems, fosters intimate spaces for visitors to explore and learn. It features intricate fruit displays along its wildlife-proof boundary, showcasing the creative skill of the Edibles Team. The interconnected sections are united by arched pergolas adorned with edible climbers, which provide a dramatic framing to the central avenue.

Garden Zones

  1. Good to Grow Area: This section offers a modern interpretation of the traditional vegetable plot. It serves as an educational space, showcasing easy-to-grow crops to inspire novice gardeners. At the centre of the zone, espaliered fruit trees encircle a central pond.
  2. Edible Flowers and Herbs Garden: Adjacent to the café in the National Centre, this garden boasts a diverse array of edible blooms, enhancing the dining experience with beautiful and productive planting.
  3. World Food Maze: Raised beds in this section showcase exotic crops representative of multicultural Britain, demonstrating the range of foods that can thrive in the UK climate. These beds are connected to each other by smaller arches smothered with edible climbers, so giving visitors a feeling of being immersed in the garden itself.
